Coral Blanche Floor Lamp

Coral Blanche Floor Lamp

Coral Blanche Floor Lamp is an innovative lighting design that artistically interprets the environmental phenomenon of coral bleaching, created by Canadian designer Yongwook Seong. This thought-provoking floor lamp, standing at 1547mm in height and 1771mm in width, employs a distinctive sea fan coral structure as its primary form, incorporating ten frost LED bulbs that symbolically represent fish eggs within the coral ecosystem. The design, which earned a Bronze A' Design Award in the Lighting Products and Fixtures Design category, masterfully translates the complex environmental issue of coral bleaching into a functional art piece. Constructed using biodegradable blends, the lamp's structure mirrors the transient beauty of bleached corals while simultaneously drawing attention to their struggle for survival in warming oceans. The choice of materials and form demonstrates a careful consideration of both environmental messaging and structural integrity, with the sea fan coral shape selected specifically for its architectural strength and aesthetic appeal. The lamp's design operation centers on providing ambient floor or wall lighting in living spaces, where its illuminated elements create a poignant reminder of marine ecosystem fragility. Developed in Banff, Canada, during May-June 2020, this lighting fixture serves as both a functional design piece and a commentary on environmental conservation, particularly highlighting how rising ocean temperatures contribute to coral reef destruction. The project exemplifies how design can bridge the gap between environmental awareness and functional aesthetics, using the paradoxical beauty of coral bleaching - a devastating ecological process - to create a compelling narrative through design language.
