Coop

The English word ‘coop’ has its roots in the Latin word caupō, which referred to a merchant, innkeeper, or tavern keeper. In Middle English it took on a meaning closer to the Old French cogne, which is similar to the English word ‘cage.’ By the mid-seventeenth century its meaning had shifted once more to denote a kind of ‘prison’ or ‘confinement’ for domesticated animals. By the late eighteenth century its meaning was firmly established as being a ‘chicken coop’ or ‘hen house’ and this is the meaning the word retains to this day. Morphologically, the word is formed from two suffixes, -oop and -er. The suffix -oop is a Dutch-derived diminutive form used to indicate a smaller version or ‘little’ version of a thing (i.e. a ‘coop’ being a small pen or enclosure). The suffix -er is an Anglo-Saxon word-forming suffix meaning one that performs a certain action, in this case the person who builds or maintains the coop. In both a historical and linguistic sense then, the word ‘coop’ has come to refer to a small enclosure for the housing and keeping of small domesticated animals, primarily chickens.
