Concretecube Decorative Concrete
Concretecube Decorative Concrete is an innovative material exploration project that challenges traditional perceptions of concrete through experimental design methodology. This comprehensive research initiative, created by designer Emese Orbán, investigates the inherent potential of concrete by manipulating its physical properties and aesthetic characteristics through various material combinations and molding techniques. The project consists of 32 concrete cubes, each measuring 55x55x55mm and weighing 300g, that showcase diverse surface treatments, textures, and finishing techniques. Through meticulous experimentation with different mold materials including PP foil, transparent foil, cork, foamboard, cardboard, decor foam, and patterned papers, the project demonstrates concrete's versatility beyond its conventional applications. The research incorporates material coupling experiments where concrete is combined with wax, decor sand, decor glass, and various coloring agents such as pigments, marbling paint, tempera, ink, and chalk, resulting in unique surface qualities ranging from burnt and rough to soft and glossy finishes. This groundbreaking exploration, which earned recognition with an Iron A' Design Award in the Street and City Furniture Design category, challenges the stereotype of concrete as merely a grey, cold, and hard material, proving that its characteristics can be significantly modified while maintaining its essential properties. The project's significance lies in its contribution to expanding the possibilities of concrete applications in decorative and architectural contexts, potentially influencing future developments in veneer systems and surface treatment technologies.
