Computer Network Switches
A computer network switch is a networking device that connects devices together on a computer network. It operates at the data link layer of the OSI model and is responsible for forwarding data packets between devices. Switches are used to create a network infrastructure that allows devices to communicate with each other, and they are an essential component of modern computer networks. Switches are designed to provide high-speed connectivity between devices on a network. They use a process called packet switching to forward data packets between devices. When a packet is received by a switch, it examines the destination MAC address and forwards the packet to the appropriate device. This process is repeated for every packet that is transmitted on the network. Switches come in a variety of sizes and configurations, from small desktop models to large enterprise-level switches. They can be managed or unmanaged, and they may have a variety of features such as VLAN support, Quality of Service (QoS) settings, and port mirroring. Managed switches allow network administrators to configure and monitor the switch, while unmanaged switches are plug-and-play devices that require no configuration. In summary, a computer network switch is a vital component of a modern computer network. It provides high-speed connectivity between devices and allows for efficient data transmission. With a variety of sizes and configurations available, switches can be tailored to meet the needs of any network.
