Color Terrae App
Color Terrae App is an innovative archaeological documentation application designed for iOS devices that revolutionizes the traditional methods of stratigraphic unit analysis and documentation in archaeological fieldwork. This sophisticated digital tool employs artificial intelligence technology to streamline the identification, analysis, classification, and description of stratigraphic units using the Munsell color code system, effectively transforming conventional paper-based archaeological documentation into a digital format. Developed by Italian designer Simone Ardito, the application integrates advanced color detection functionality that can identify colors from user-captured photographs and automatically associate them with specific Munsell color codes, significantly enhancing the accuracy and efficiency of archaeological documentation. The app features a comprehensive digital diary system that serves as both a notebook and photographic archive, allowing archaeologists to maintain detailed records of their findings, complete with notes, voice memos, and photographs organized in an intuitive three-section structure: recents, lists, and all. A particularly noteworthy feature is the specialized Dig Mode, which provides an outdoor-optimized interface specifically designed for field conditions. The application's artificial intelligence component analyzes photographs pixel by pixel, matching them against 1000 hex color codes grouped into 100 color units, each corresponding to a specific Munsell color classification. This innovative approach to archaeological documentation earned the app a Silver A' Design Award in the Mobile Technologies, Applications and Software Design category in 2021, recognizing its contribution to digitalizing archaeological workflows while maintaining familiar user experience patterns for professionals in the field. The development process, which began in late 2020, involved extensive research and user testing to ensure the application effectively addressed the three critical phases of archaeological work: excavation documentation, color code assignment, and post-excavation study.
