Coelostats
Coelostats are astronomical instruments used to track the motion of celestial objects across the sky. They consist of a flat mirror that is mounted on an axis that is aligned with the Earth's axis of rotation. The mirror is rotated at a rate that is equal to the Earth's rotation, which allows it to remain fixed on a particular point in the sky. This means that any light that is reflected off the mirror will remain fixed on a particular point on the ground, allowing astronomers to observe a particular object for an extended period of time. Coelostats were first developed in the early 20th century and were used primarily for solar observations. They were particularly useful for observing the Sun because they allowed astronomers to study the Sun's corona, which is normally obscured by the bright light of the Sun's disk. Coelostats were also used for other astronomical observations, such as observing stars, planets, and comets. One of the advantages of coelostats is that they can be used to observe objects that are close to the horizon, which can be difficult to observe with other types of instruments. This is because the mirror is mounted on an axis that is aligned with the Earth's axis of rotation, which means that it can be tilted to any angle. This allows astronomers to observe objects that are close to the horizon without having to worry about atmospheric distortion or other factors that can affect the quality of the observation. In recent years, coelostats have been largely replaced by other types of instruments, such as heliostats and solar telescopes. However, they are still used in some applications, such as solar research and education.
