Coco Chair Chair
Coco Chair Chair is an innovative outdoor seating design that addresses urban sustainability through creative upcycling of shopping trolley materials, created by Irish designer Moses Rowen. This socially conscious furniture piece, completed in 2016, features a meticulously hand-formed galvanized steel frame complemented by premium teak woodwork, demonstrating exceptional craftsmanship and environmental consideration. The design's distinctive characteristic lies in its unique construction methodology, employing cold-forming techniques and hand-bent metalwork achieved through custom-made jigs, deliberately avoiding welding to maintain the material's natural finish. The chair's dimensions of 600mm x 800mm x 900mm reflect careful ergonomic consideration, while its weather-resistant properties make it suitable for outdoor placement. Beyond its functional aspects, the Coco Chair serves as a powerful commentary on urban socioeconomic issues, particularly addressing the prevalent problem of abandoned shopping trolleys in urban environments. The design, which won the Bronze A' Design Award in the Fine Arts and Art Installation Design category in 2017, successfully balances aesthetic appeal with social consciousness, creating a piece that not only provides comfortable seating but also catalyzes important discussions about urban responsibility and sustainability. The chair's sophisticated execution demonstrates a harmonious blend of industrial aesthetics with refined craftsmanship, featuring a brushed satin finish achieved through meticulous hand-finishing techniques and seamlessly integrated wooden elements that required 200kg of pressure to achieve their flawless union.
