Clamping
The term “clamping” is a lexical item which has been in use for centuries, and its origin and evolution reflect this fact. The earliest attested use of the word is in the Middle English period, where it is found in the form of “clampen”. The etymological origin of the word is uncertain, but linguists have suggested that it may derive from Old English roots such as “clamp” and “clampen” with the meaning “to squeeze” or “to fasten”. From the 15th century onwards, the usage of the word has shifted from its concrete physical meaning to its more abstract figurative use. It is now primarily used to describe a restriction or limitation of movement, freedom or expression. Morphologically speaking, the word is formed through the addition of the affix “-ing”, which changes the verb “clamp” into a gerund form. Finally, the use of the word “clamping” in a pragmatic context denotes an act of authority, either through force or a metaphorical sense of control.

Clamping
Clamping is a graphics technique used to prevent extreme values from distorting an image. It works by limiting an image's values to a certain range, such as 0-255 for an 8-bit image, ensuring that no data is lost. It is a commonly used technique for achieving color consistency in an image when converting between color spaces. Important works include the numerical range clamping algorithm developed by J. P. Lewis in 1977, which he later refined in 1981, and the three-value clamping algorithm proposed by L.G. Roberts in 1964.
