Christo

The term ‘Christo’ is an ancient Greek word which is derived from the combination of two words, ‘Christ’ and ‘-os’. ‘Christ’ is from the Greek ‘Christos’ which is itself a transliteration of the Hebrew ‘mashiach’ (Messiah). The suffix ‘-os’ is a common suffix that is appended to nouns or adjectives to indicate a gender, or to indicate the plural form. Therefore, the origin of the word ‘Christo’ is the transliteration, combination, and pluralization of the word ‘Christos’. From an historical perspective, ‘Christo’ was once an honorific title used to refer to Jesus and then, more broadly, to refer to any anointed person. ‘Christo’ also indicates an act of anointing, as well as a state of being anointed. From a linguistic perspective, ‘Christo’s’ morphology is a combination of three morphemes. These morphemes are ‘Christ’, ‘-os’ and ‘o’. On a pragmatic level, the term ‘Christo’ is used to denote a divine appointment, or to refer to someone who has been appointed by God.
