Chongqing Zhongshuge Bookstore is an innovative architectural masterpiece and cultural landmark that revolutionizes the traditional concept of bookstore design through its dramatic interpretation of urban landscape and literary space. Located in Chongqing, China, this 1,300-square-meter interior space, designed by Li Xiang and completed in 2019, masterfully incorporates the city's mountainous topography and cultural heritage into its architectural narrative. The design features five distinct reading areas, each crafted as a unique wonderland that captures different aspects of Chongqing's essence. The entrance welcomes visitors with a sophisticated glass facade adorned with text, leading to a dark brown lobby distinguished by scattered lampshade-shaped bookshelves. A particularly remarkable feature is the main study's ladder hall, where staircases ingeniously double as bookshelves, while mirrored ceilings create an illusion of infinite space, effectively doubling the visual magnitude of the already impressive room. The children's reading room showcases colorful bookshelves decorated with local architectural motifs and transportation elements, creating an engaging educational environment. This platinum A' Design Award-winning project in the Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category demonstrates exceptional innovation in spatial design, successfully addressing the challenge of representing a mountainous cityscape within a confined space while maintaining high functionality.
