Chisels

A chisel is a hand tool that is used to carve, cut, or shape hard materials such as wood, stone, or metal. The tool consists of a sharp blade, known as the cutting edge, which is attached to a handle. The cutting edge of the chisel can be flat, beveled, or curved, depending on the intended use. Chisels are commonly used by carpenters, sculptors, and metalworkers to create intricate designs or to remove material from a workpiece. The earliest chisels were made from stone and were used by ancient civilizations such as the Egyptians and the Greeks. Over time, chisels evolved to include metal blades and wooden handles. Today, chisels are made from a variety of materials, including high-carbon steel, tungsten carbide, and ceramic. Chisels are typically used in conjunction with a mallet or hammer to apply force to the cutting edge. The user strikes the end of the handle with the mallet to drive the blade into the material being worked on. The angle at which the chisel is held and the force applied can be adjusted to achieve different effects. For example, a shallow angle and light force can be used to create fine details, while a steeper angle and heavy force can be used to remove larger amounts of material. Chisels come in a variety of shapes and sizes, each designed for a specific task. Some common types of chisels include bench chisels, mortise chisels, carving chisels, and paring chisels. Bench chisels are the most commonly used type and are used for general woodworking tasks. Mortise chisels are designed for cutting mortises, or rectangular holes, in wood. Carving chisels are used for intricate carving work, while paring chisels are used for delicate shaving and shaping tasks.
