Cheung's Residence Residence
Cheung's Residence Residence is an innovative architectural project that exemplifies contemporary residential design principles through its emphasis on simplicity, openness, and natural light utilization. Located on a 5,000-square-foot site in a conservative residential neighborhood, this two-story residence represents a complete transformation from its predecessor, a deteriorating 1960s structure. The design philosophy centers on maximizing spatial efficiency while maintaining aesthetic elegance, featuring an intelligently conceived layout that includes an atrium and balcony on the north side, illuminating the entrance and dining area. The residence's southern facade incorporates floor-to-ceiling sliding windows in the living room and kitchen areas, optimizing natural light penetration and spatial flexibility. The second floor houses private bedrooms, strategically positioned away from street view, with louver shades managing solar gain while maintaining privacy. The integration of skylights throughout the building reinforces the design's commitment to natural illumination. The structure employs high-performance glazing and concrete walls for optimal thermal mass, while the concrete deck features a high solar reflectance rating roof prepared for future solar panel installation. The design demonstrates exceptional environmental consciousness through its preservation of existing landscape elements, incorporation of sustainable materials, and anticipated LEED certification. This residence, which earned the prestigious Golden A' Design Award in the Architecture, Building and Structure Design category, stands as a testament to innovative residential architecture that harmoniously balances functionality, sustainability, and aesthetic appeal.
