Chesset Chess set is an innovative and artistically crafted modern interpretation of the traditional chess game, designed by American artist Duval Patterson. This sophisticated gaming apparatus combines functional gameplay with contemporary aesthetic sensibilities, featuring manufactured birch hardwood dowels and squares that have been meticulously milled, drilled, sanded, and painted to create a visually striking ensemble. The design's distinctive floating board configuration employs 64 square manufactured birch hardwood blocks attached to a plywood base, with wooden separators creating an illusion of suspension. The chess pieces, crafted from varying diameters of birch hardwood dowels, maintain recognizable forms while embracing minimalist principles, with the king and queen standing at 0.076 meters in height, distinguished by their crown additions, while other pieces range from 0.025 to 0.05 meters. The complete board measures 0.44 meters square with a height of 0.05 meters, featuring a satin finish and felt-covered bases for both pieces and board. This exceptional design, which earned the prestigious Golden A' Design Award in the Toys, Games and Hobby Products Design category, emerged from a deeply personal inspiration involving a war-wounded friend's chess-playing experience. The project, spanning four decades of refinement since its inception in 1970s New York City, represents a harmonious fusion of artistic expression and functional design, demonstrating how traditional game elements can be reimagined through a modern lens while maintaining their essential playability and cultural significance.
