Chenglong Wetland Environmental Art Event
Chenglong Wetland Environmental Art Event is a transformative environmental and cultural initiative established in Taiwan's coastal region, representing a pioneering approach to addressing ecological challenges through artistic intervention. This comprehensive project emerged as a response to severe environmental degradation caused by groundwater over-extraction, which resulted in significant land subsidence and seawater intrusion affecting approximately 60% of local farmlands. Launched in 2010, the initiative has evolved into Taiwan's largest environmental art gallery, spanning approximately 171 hectares of wetland area. The project uniquely combines ecological conservation with artistic expression, featuring international artist residencies, site-specific installations, and community-engaged creative practices. A significant milestone was reached in 2022 with the introduction of A Flowing Feast of Arts, which innovatively transported performance art from traditional theater spaces into the natural environment, while simultaneously promoting local gastronomy through eco-dining experiences featuring seasonal indigenous ingredients. The event has demonstrated remarkable success in environmental awareness raising, community revitalization, and economic development, attracting 5,000 participants and generating substantial tourism revenue despite challenging circumstances. This innovative approach to environmental art and community engagement has earned recognition through the Silver A' Design Award in the Event and Happening Design category, acknowledging its significant contribution to sustainable development and cultural preservation.
