Charles Harrison was an American industrial designer who made significant contributions to the field of design. He was born on October 11, 1942, in Green Bay, Wisconsin, and graduated from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign with a degree in industrial design. He went on to work for Sears, Roebuck and Company, where he designed products ranging from tools to televisions. One of his most notable contributions was the design of the View-Master, a popular children's toy that uses reels of stereoscopic images to create a 3D effect. Harrison's design made the View-Master more durable and easier to use, and it became one of the most successful toys of all time. Harrison was also known for his work on the first plastic garbage can with a snap-on lid, which became a best-seller for Rubbermaid. He was a pioneer in using injection-molded plastic to create affordable, high-quality products. In addition to his work as a designer, Harrison was a mentor and advocate for young designers. He served as a professor of industrial design at the University of Illinois at Chicago and was a founding member of the Black Designers Association. He was committed to promoting diversity and inclusion in the design industry and worked to create opportunities for underrepresented groups.
