Chair with Belly Button Chair is an innovative series of lightweight and portable seating solutions that revolutionizes conventional sitting experiences by adapting to various environmental contexts such as stairs, floors, and corners. Designed by I Chao Wang, this sculptural furniture collection emerged from a conceptual exploration of melting forms and organic shapes, distinguished by its signature belly button feature that adds a playful anthropomorphic element to each piece. The series comprises three distinct variants: a stair seat (53 x 43 x 38 cm), a floor seat (57 x 57 x 36 cm), and a small seat (34 x 35 x 6 cm), each crafted through rotational molding technology using polyethylene with sandblasted surfaces for a smooth finish. The design philosophy behind these chairs stems from extensive research into human sitting behaviors and the natural tendency to utilize unconventional surfaces as impromptu seating areas. The asymmetrical stair seat features strategic grip points to prevent tipping, while the floor model incorporates a wide disk-like base for stability and a tapered seatback for extended comfort. The design process involved studying clay deformation patterns to inform the chairs' final forms, resulting in pieces that appear to meld with their surroundings while maintaining structural integrity. This innovative approach to furniture design earned recognition with a Bronze A' Design Award in the Furniture Design category, acknowledging its contribution to redefining spatial utilization and user comfort through thoughtful design.
