Chair Of Soul Chair
Chair of Soul Chair is an innovative furniture design that exemplifies the harmonious fusion of traditional Chinese aesthetics with contemporary ergonomic principles, created by designer Wen Jenq Cherng. This meditation-inspired seating solution, which earned the Bronze A' Design Award in the Furniture Design category, represents a thoughtful approach to modern furniture design that prioritizes both physical comfort and spiritual well-being. The chair's design philosophy centers on achieving perfect postural support through carefully considered proportions and structural elements, featuring a slightly bulging backrest that embraces the user's body and provides strategic support at key points including the waist, shoulders, and neck. Crafted from premium Sulawesi ebony wood, the chair showcases sophisticated deep-black grain patterns that enhance its refined appearance, while the integration of metallic copper tubing in the legs and purple cow Nappa leather upholstery creates a compelling material contrast. The design draws inspiration from Ming Dynasty furniture, incorporating elegant proportions and simplified forms while modernizing traditional joinery techniques through an innovative arc structure that connects the seat to the legs. The chair's construction employs mortise and tenon joints to enhance structural integrity while maintaining visual lightness, demonstrating a sophisticated understanding of furniture engineering. This piece represents a two-year development process, completed between 2016 and 2018, resulting in a design that successfully balances functional requirements with aesthetic refinement, creating a timeless piece intended for generational use.
