Cedar Hill Loop Movable Pavilion is an innovative architectural intervention designed as a subterranean circular structure that harmoniously integrates with the natural topography of a 30-foot-tall hill. This groundbreaking pavilion, designed by Jianshi Wu and Yitan Sun, represents a significant advancement in adaptive architectural design, featuring a sophisticated mechanical system that enables both elevation and rotation to accommodate diverse public activities. The structure, which earned a Bronze A' Design Award in Architecture, Building and Structure Design category, exemplifies a thoughtful balance between technological innovation and environmental preservation. With an outer diameter of 25 meters and an inner diameter of 20 meters, the pavilion encompasses 176 square meters of versatile space, supported by four industrial-standard vertical mast lifts positioned on a circular rail system, each capable of supporting 5,443 kilograms. The pavilion's construction employs a casting concrete base, prefabricated glass panels, aluminum framing, and customized wood ceiling components that conform to the existing terrain. This architectural marvel can transform from a fully concealed state to various elevated positions, creating unique spatial configurations suitable for performances, gatherings, and cultural events. The design's innovative approach to public space activation while preserving natural landscapes demonstrates exceptional consideration for environmental impact and social functionality, accommodating up to 70 persons while maintaining the integrity of its surroundings.
