Casa Una Community Center
Casa Una Community Center is an innovative architectural project located in Uberlandia, Brazil, representing a harmonious fusion of community space and sustainable design principles. This multi-purpose facility, spanning 1,099 square meters with dimensions of 55 by 28 meters and a height of 9 meters, serves as a vital focal point for a new mixed-use neighborhood. The structure, which earned a Silver A' Design Award in Architecture, Building and Structure Design category, exemplifies excellence in sustainable architecture through its thoughtful integration with the surrounding parkland. The building's distinctive design features a laminated timber structure from certified sources, complemented by a geometrically patterned green roof hosting three species of vegetation, effectively reducing solar heat gain while creating an aesthetic fifth facade. Drawing inspiration from Brazilian Modernism, particularly the organic forms of architect Severiano Porto, the center's curvilinear design responds dynamically to its environment, following the contours of an adjacent lake and plaza. The facility encompasses multiple functional spaces, including an open auditorium, food hall, exhibition space, and community association office, all organized along a central axis with a welcoming double-height entrance space. Notable sustainable features include passive ventilation systems, specialized solar heat-reducing glass, and innovative thermal comfort techniques. The project, initiated in August 2018 and completed in April 2023, demonstrates exceptional architectural merit through its successful integration of social functionality, environmental consciousness, and aesthetic excellence, making it a significant contribution to contemporary sustainable architecture.
