Carlos Bunga

Carlos Bunga is a highly regarded Portuguese artist whose work spans across various mediums, including sculpture, installation, painting, and drawing. He is known for his ability to blur the boundaries between architecture and sculpture, creating works that explore shape, space, and form. Bunga's artistic practice is characterized by a fascination with the relationship between the built environment and the human experience, and his works often engage with themes of memory, temporality, and impermanence. Bunga's works have been exhibited widely in Europe and beyond, with notable exhibitions including the 2017 Venice Biennale, where he represented Portugal. He has also been the recipient of numerous awards and grants, including the prestigious Joan Miró Prize in 2019. Bunga's mastery of a wide range of materials, from fabric and leather to paper and cardboard, allows him to create works that are both visually striking and conceptually rich. One of Bunga's most celebrated works is The House of the World, an installation piece that was displayed at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Madrid in 2011. The work consists of a series of interconnected rooms made entirely out of cardboard, which visitors are invited to explore. Through this work, Bunga explores the relationship between architecture and the human body, creating a space that is at once familiar and disorienting. Overall, Carlos Bunga is an artist whose work defies easy categorization, blending elements of sculpture, architecture, and installation to create works that are both visually stunning and intellectually engaging. His ability to engage with themes of memory, temporality, and impermanence has made him one of the most exciting artists working today.
