Canoe Cat Bed is an innovative pet furniture design that exemplifies the harmonious fusion of traditional craftsmanship and contemporary functionality, specifically created to address the sleeping habits of domestic cats who spend approximately sixteen hours daily in repose. This distinguished design, which earned a Bronze A' Design Award in the Pet Care, Toys, Supplies and Products for Animals Design category, features a distinctive construction utilizing fique, a sustainable natural fiber that is hand-spun and expertly knitted by artisans from Colombian rural regions. The bed's sophisticated form is achieved through a meticulous folding technique where opposite sides of the fabric are secured with leather cords, creating characteristic X-shaped stitches that contribute to both structural integrity and aesthetic appeal. Measuring 650 mm in width, 360 mm in depth, and 80 mm in height, the design incorporates additional sensory elements including hand-woven mini balls, beach stones, metallic rattles, and felt balls, creating a multisensory experience for felines. The project, conceived in the spring of 2015 in the Santander Region of Colombia and completed in Miami, represents a significant achievement in sustainable pet furniture design, utilizing German eco-friendly dyes for coloring the fique fibers to ensure environmental responsibility.
