Canela for Two Seat is an innovative furniture design that exemplifies the harmonious fusion of traditional craftsmanship with contemporary aesthetics. This visually striking lover's bench, created by designers Renata Gutierrez and James Rowland, showcases a thoughtful approach to sustainable design through its use of reclaimed Canela Preta wood sourced from a 200-year-old colonial house in Paraty, Brazil. The design features a distinctive low backrest supported by copper rods, drawing inspiration from traditional Windsor chairs while presenting a modern interpretation. A notable aspect of its design philosophy is the integration of copper rings with wooden centers, which rather than concealing the historical nail holes, deliberately highlights these marks of time as decorative elements, paying homage to the Japanese art of Kintsukuroi. The bench's structural integrity is achieved through sophisticated joinery techniques, including finger joints and wedged mortise and tenon connections, which not only provide robust support but also serve as aesthetic details. Measuring 960mm in width, 450mm in depth, and 610mm in height, the piece demonstrates careful ergonomic consideration in its backrest positioning, offering optimal support while maintaining a subtle, non-imposing presence.
