Caffe Medici Coffee Shop

Caffe Medici Coffee Shop

Caffe Medici Coffee Shop is an architecturally distinctive coffee establishment that masterfully reimagines the traditional bungalow aesthetic within a contemporary commercial context. Designed by Jean-Pierre Trou and Aaron Vollmer, this innovative retail space seamlessly integrates local architectural heritage with modern design sensibilities. The structure's exterior features a remarkable steel portal that frames the entrance and windows, complemented by a distinctive wooden scale-like facade that pays homage to traditional wood shingle construction while creating a pronounced horizontal pattern. The interior design demonstrates exceptional spatial organization, with the centerpiece being a wavelike Venetian plaster ceiling above the espresso bar, symbolically representing the essential elements of fire and water in coffee preparation. The design philosophy embraces both digital fabrication techniques and traditional craftsmanship, resulting in precise detailing while maintaining cost efficiency and minimizing material waste. The space is thoughtfully divided into intimate coves that reference bungalow archetypes, creating varied customer experiences within a cohesive design language. This architectural achievement, which earned the Silver A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category in 2018, successfully creates an atmosphere that feels both historically grounded and contemporarily relevant. The project, completed in approximately 30 weeks in Austin, Texas, stands as a testament to innovative retail design that respects local architectural heritage while pushing the boundaries of modern commercial spaces. The design's success lies in its ability to create a neighborhood oasis that appears to predate its surrounding commercial development, effectively achieving its goal of providing a familiar yet intriguing customer experience through its thoughtful interpretation of traditional architectural elements.
