Cadeira Chair is an innovative furniture design that serves both as a functional seating solution and an educational showcase of wood diversity, featuring 34 distinct wood species from Brazil and around the world. Created by Brazilian architect and designer Alvaro Wolmer, this conceptual piece emerged from his extensive 35-year experience collecting and working with fine woods, addressing the common question about wood species identification in furniture. The chair's design, while maintaining a basic structural form, emphasizes the natural beauty and variety of wooden materials, with each component carefully labeled with both common and scientific names. Standing 82 centimeters high, 60 centimeters wide, and 60 centimeters deep, the chair represents a harmonious blend of functionality and educational purpose, requiring approximately 140 hours of skilled craftsmanship to complete. The manufacturing process combines traditional woodworking techniques with modern technology, utilizing a CNC router for precise name engravings. This unique approach to furniture design earned the chair a Bronze A' Design Award in the Furniture Design category in 2022, recognizing its innovative contribution to the field. The chair not only provides comfortable seating but also serves as a conversation starter, enabling users to learn about various wood species while often triggering nostalgic connections to familiar woods from their past. The project, completed in São Paulo between January and October 2020, exemplifies how furniture design can transcend its primary function to become an educational tool and a preservation of natural resource knowledge.
