Bushrod Washington
Bushrod Washington was an American jurist and politician who served as an associate justice of the United States Supreme Court from 1798 until his death in 1829. Born in Virginia in 1762, Washington was the nephew of George Washington and received his legal education under the tutelage of his uncle. He went on to become a prominent lawyer in Virginia and was elected to the Virginia House of Delegates in 1787. In 1798, he was appointed to the Supreme Court by President John Adams, where he served for over 30 years. During his tenure on the Supreme Court, Washington was known for his conservative views and strict interpretation of the Constitution. He was a strong advocate for states' rights and limited federal power, and often sided with Chief Justice John Marshall in cases that upheld the power of the federal government. Washington also authored several important opinions, including the majority opinion in the landmark case of Marbury v. Madison, which established the principle of judicial review. In addition to his work on the Supreme Court, Washington was also involved in politics and served as a member of the Virginia House of Delegates, the Virginia Constitutional Convention, and the United States House of Representatives. He was a strong supporter of Thomas Jefferson and the Democratic-Republican Party, and was a vocal opponent of the Federalist Party and their policies. Despite his distinguished career, Washington was known for his modesty and humility, and was highly respected by his colleagues and peers. He died in Philadelphia in 1829 at the age of 67.
