Bouchra Khalili

Bouchra Khalili is a Moroccan-French artist whose work is characterized by a deep engagement with issues of migration, identity, and displacement. Her practice spans a range of media, including video, installation, photography, and text, and is informed by her own experiences as a member of the North African diaspora. Khalili's work is notable for its focus on the stories and perspectives of marginalized communities, particularly North African immigrants in Europe, and its exploration of the complex social and political forces that shape their lives. One of Khalili's most significant works is The Mapping Journey Project, an ongoing series of video interviews with migrants from around the world. In these interviews, Khalili invites her subjects to draw maps of their journeys, using their own words and gestures to narrate their experiences of migration and displacement. The resulting videos are powerful and deeply moving, offering a glimpse into the lives of people whose stories are often overlooked or ignored. Another key aspect of Khalili's work is her interest in the political implications of globalization. Her films and installations often explore the ways in which global economic and political forces intersect with the lives of individuals and communities, particularly those on the margins of society. Through her work, Khalili seeks to challenge dominant narratives and give voice to those who are often silenced or excluded. Overall, Bouchra Khalili is a deeply thoughtful and engaged artist whose work offers a powerful critique of the social and political forces that shape our world. Through her use of a range of media and her focus on marginalized communities, she invites us to see the world in new and more complex ways, and to recognize the humanity and dignity of those who are too often overlooked.
