Boris Manner
Boris Manner was a prominent Austrian painter and sculptor known for his unique style that combined abstract expressionism with influences from various cultural backgrounds. Manner's works are characterized by their use of geometric shapes and colors, as well as the presence of symbols and texts that convey the artist's message to the viewer. Manner's art is often described as a reflection of his inner world, with each piece representing a different aspect of his psyche. Manner's artistic journey began in Vienna, where he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts before moving to New York to attend the Art Students League. It was during his time in New York that Manner was exposed to the works of the abstract expressionists, which would go on to influence his own style. After returning to Austria in 1954, Manner continued to develop his unique style, drawing inspiration from a variety of sources, including Arabic and African art. One of Manner's most important works is the Trilogy of the States of Mind, a series of paintings created between 1970 and 1980 that explore different aspects of the human psyche. The first painting in the series, The State of Mind of the Creator, features a large, colorful geometric shape that represents the creative force within us all. The second painting, The State of Mind of the Observer, is a more subdued piece that represents the act of observing and contemplating the world around us. The final painting, The State of Mind of the Destroyer, is a dark and foreboding piece that represents the destructive force within us all. Manner's legacy as an artist continues to be celebrated today, with his works being exhibited in galleries and museums around the world. His unique style and use of symbols and texts have inspired countless artists and continue to captivate audiences to this day.
