Body With Soul Wine Bottles With Labels
Body with Soul Wine Bottles with Labels is an innovative packaging design project that masterfully combines traditional Korean porcelain craftsmanship with contemporary wine bottle design, created by architect Theodore Kwack in collaboration with twelve creative artists. This groundbreaking design initiative, completed in 2018, represents the first attempt to craft wine bottles from porcelain artifacts in South Korea, demonstrating a unique fusion of cultural heritage and modern functionality. The collection consists of twelve meticulously crafted white porcelain bottles, each standing 300mm in height with a diameter of 75mm, produced through a sophisticated three-stage firing process at temperatures reaching 1250 degrees Celsius. The distinctive feature of these vessels lies in their dual artistic expression: the body comprises the elegant white porcelain container, while the soul is represented through individually designed labels created by a diverse group of makers, visual artists, designers, and architects. The production process involves complex slipcasting techniques and multiple firing stages - bisque, glost, and decal - ensuring both structural integrity and aesthetic refinement. The label designs, requiring an intricate 26-plate color separation process, measure 145mm by 90mm and draw inspiration from traditional Joseon dynasty paintings, particularly referencing the white porcelains of 19th century Haeju. This project, which earned a Bronze A' Design Award in the Packaging Design category, exemplifies the successful marriage of traditional craftsmanship with contemporary design sensibilities, while addressing the technical challenges of maintaining bottle shape integrity during high-temperature firing processes. The design represents a significant innovation in the beverage packaging industry, offering a sophisticated alternative to conventional wine bottles while preserving and reinterpreting Korean cultural heritage.
