Billy Name
Billy Name, born William Linich Jr. in Poughkeepsie, New York in 1940, was a prominent figure in the New York City art scene of the 1960s. He is best known for his work as the resident photographer at Andy Warhol's Factory studio, where he captured iconic moments of the Pop Art era. Name's photographs are characterized by their raw, candid quality, and their ability to capture the essence of the Factory and its inhabitants. In addition to his photography, Name also worked as a production and lighting designer for Warhol's films and shows. He was responsible for creating the distinctive look and feel of Warhol's films, and his innovative use of lighting helped to create the psychedelic atmosphere of the Electric Circus, a popular nightclub of the era. Name's influence on the art world extends far beyond his work with Warhol. He was a prolific artist in his own right, creating sculptures, installations, and other works that explored themes of identity, transformation, and the human condition. He was also a pioneer of the use of video as an art form, creating experimental video pieces that pushed the boundaries of the medium. Despite his many accomplishments, Name remained a humble and unassuming figure throughout his life. He passed away in 2016, leaving behind a legacy as one of the most important artists of his generation.
