Bicycle Brakes
Bicycle brakes are an essential component of any bicycle, providing the rider with the ability to slow down and stop the bike safely. The primary purpose of bicycle brakes is to convert the kinetic energy of the moving bicycle into heat energy, dissipating it through friction. The two most common types of bicycle brakes are rim brakes and disc brakes. Rim brakes work by squeezing the brake pads against the rim of the wheel, creating friction that slows down the bike. There are two types of rim brakes: caliper brakes and V-brakes. Caliper brakes are the most common type of rim brake and are mounted on the fork and seat stay of the bicycle frame. V-brakes, also known as linear-pull brakes, are a type of caliper brake that uses a longer arm to increase the leverage and braking power. Disc brakes, on the other hand, use a metal rotor attached to the hub of the wheel and a caliper that squeezes the brake pads against the rotor to slow down the bike. Disc brakes are more powerful than rim brakes and are commonly used on mountain bikes and other off-road bicycles. In addition to these two main types of brakes, there are also coaster brakes, which are commonly found on children's bikes and some cruiser bikes. Coaster brakes work by pedaling backwards, which engages a brake inside the hub of the rear wheel. Proper maintenance and adjustment of bicycle brakes is crucial for safe and effective braking. This includes regularly inspecting the brake pads for wear, ensuring proper alignment of the brake calipers, and adjusting the tension of the brake cables.
