Belonging Residential
Belonging Residential is a multi-generational residential interior design project that exemplifies contemporary approaches to spatial organization within constrained architectural parameters, specifically addressing the complex requirements of three-generation cohabitation within a 512-square-meter dwelling in Taiwan. Designed by Lo Fang Ming of Dreamer Interior Design, this residence navigates the intricate balance between communal living spaces and individual privacy zones while confronting significant architectural challenges including a narrow, elongated floor plan and limited ceiling heights that typically compromise spatial perception and functional distribution. The design employs a sophisticated architectural vocabulary centered on linear grille elements that serve as both a conceptual metaphor for Eastern familial continuity and a practical solution for spatial definition, extending vertically from the first floor through multiple levels to create integrated systems of display, storage, and partition functions. This linear motif, executed through continuous wood skin textures combined with strategic lighting design and mirror material applications, operates as an organizing principle that visually expands the constrained vertical dimensions while maximizing natural light penetration throughout the interior volumes. The residence accommodates an entrepreneur, adult children, and young grandchildren, requiring the integration of diverse functional zones including living areas, sacrificial spaces, dual dining rooms, social areas, office spaces, reading zones, and entertainment facilities, with the top floor serving as an additional family gathering center featuring outdoor terrace extensions that introduce casual, naturalistic spatial qualities. The design methodology draws inspiration from Eastern Buddhist concepts of freedom in mind, manifesting through the harmonious integration of human needs, natural environmental considerations, and aesthetic refinement, with the grille elements functioning as organic connective tissue that links the daily activities of different family members while fostering intergenerational communication and creating a cohesive sense of belonging. The technical execution combines stained wood veneer parquet with integrated lighting lines and ceiling-mounted mirror materials that create symmetric spatial mappings, effectively addressing the visual limitations imposed by the original architectural constraints while maintaining distinct functional zones with comfortable circulation proportions and abundant light utilization. The project, which commenced in May 2023 and reached completion in May 2024, demonstrates advanced problem-solving in residential interior design through its resolution of the fundamental challenge of constructing open, penetrating spatial relationships that simultaneously preserve functional independence and facilitate family interaction across different areas. The design's innovative use of reflective surfaces and linear continuity creates a sense of spatial magnificence and brightness that transcends the physical limitations of the structure, while the grille system adapts to the specific living habits of different user groups, developing unique functional applications within individual private areas that extend beyond mere spatial division to encompass display and storage capabilities. Belonging Residential received the Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category in 2025, recognizing its creative approach to multi-generational living, skillful material integration, and thoughtful spatial organization that enhances quality of life through design innovation. The project represents a significant contribution to contemporary residential interior design discourse, particularly in addressing the increasingly relevant challenge of multi-generational housing within urban contexts where spatial constraints necessitate inventive design solutions that maintain both functional efficiency and aesthetic sophistication while respecting cultural values regarding family structure and intergenerational relationships.
