Barber
The word ‘Barber’ can be traced to the Latin word ‘barba’, meaning ‘beard’. It is thought to have evolved in the Middle English barbour, which was used to specifically refer to a man who shaved or trimmed beards. In Old French, the word ‘barbier’ was used to refer to the same professional. The Middle English rendition of the word, barbour, was used to refer to any sort of ‘barber’ including barbers specialized in haircuts as well as barbers specialized in performing medical procedures. It would later evolve into a more specialized term which referred to a person who cut hair only. The term has held the same meaning for centuries and its morphological makeup has changed very little. Its original meaning of ‘one who cuts a beard’ has been preserved in the modern term, barber. The term does not have any other specific meanings and the tools associated with the profession, such as scissors, razors, shaving mugs, and combs, are used exclusively for beauty services. From a pragmatic perspective, the term ‘barber’ has been used to mean ‘one who provides hair care services’.
