Backward Design

Backward Design is an instructional design model that emphasizes the importance of starting with the end goal in mind. This approach involves identifying the desired learning outcomes first, and then designing assessments and instruction that align with those outcomes. By focusing on the end goal, educators can ensure that their curriculum is aligned with their desired outcomes, and that their instruction and assessments are effective in helping students achieve those outcomes. One key aspect of Backward Design is its emphasis on alignment. By starting with the end goal in mind, educators can ensure that all aspects of their curriculum are aligned with their desired outcomes. This includes assessments, instruction, and learning activities. By aligning all aspects of the curriculum, educators can create a cohesive and effective learning experience for their students. Another key aspect of Backward Design is its emphasis on evidence. This approach involves designing assessments that measure progress towards the desired outcomes, and using that evidence to inform instruction. By using evidence to guide instruction, educators can make informed decisions about how to best support their students in achieving the desired outcomes. Finally, Backward Design emphasizes the importance of reflection. This involves reflecting on the effectiveness of the curriculum, instruction, and assessments, and making adjustments as needed. By reflecting on the effectiveness of the curriculum, educators can continuously improve their instructional practices and ensure that their curriculum is meeting the needs of their students. Overall, Backward Design is a powerful instructional design model that can help educators create effective and aligned curriculum. By starting with the end goal in mind, using evidence to guide instruction, and reflecting on the effectiveness of their practices, educators can create a learning experience that is engaging, effective, and meaningful for their students.

Backward Design

Backward Design is an instructional design model which focuses on the desired outcome of a lesson or module. It begins with the end goal in mind and works backward to determine the best way to reach that goal. This approach involves creating a learning objective, designing assessments to measure the progress towards that objective, and then designing activities and materials to help students reach the goal. Backward Design emphasizes the importance of planning and creating an effective learning experience for students.

Backward Design

Backward Design is an instructional design model developed by Grant Wiggins and Jay McTighe that emphasizes the importance of designing curriculum after determining desired outcomes. This model encourages educators to begin the curriculum design process by first identifying the desired results and then creating assessments and instruction that is based on those desired results. By considering the goals and objectives of the learning experience first, the design process is inherently backward to the traditional approach which starts by creating instruction, followed by assessments, and then determining the end goal. The Backward Design method is based on principles such as alignment, evidence and reflection.
