Baan Tea and Coffee Table is an innovative furniture design that challenges conventional table aesthetics through its unique interpretation of geographical contour models, created by Korean designer Changheon Lee. This distinctive piece, whose name derives from the Korean word 'bandae' meaning 'oppose' or 'counteract,' represents a bold departure from traditional table design by deliberately minimizing functional surface area in favor of artistic expression. The table's design philosophy centers on the concept of defamiliarization, featuring a dichotomous harmony between functional and non-functional elements through contrasting materials and forms. The functional areas are characterized by rectilinear shapes and metallic finishes, while the non-functional sections showcase curvilinear forms crafted from cork, creating an engaging visual and tactile contrast. Measuring 1500mm in length, 1020mm in width, and 620mm in height, the table accommodates six people with precisely calculated individual spaces based on extensive research of café tray dimensions. The design incorporates built-in compartments for tea set storage in its center, utilizing a combination of ceramic ware, cork, and aluminum materials, with the legs crafted from black aluminum. This innovative approach to furniture design earned recognition through a Bronze A' Design Award in the Furniture Design category, acknowledging its contribution to challenging established furniture design paradigms. The table's development, spanning from October 2014 to January 2016, represents a thoughtful exploration of essential functionality while questioning the fundamental assumptions about furniture design, ultimately offering users a new perspective on the relationship between form, function, and artistic expression in everyday objects.
