ZENustas Hair Salon is an innovative interior design project that masterfully blends Eastern and Western architectural elements to create a sophisticated beauty salon space in Yaizu, Japan, near Mount Fuji. The 80-square-meter salon, winner of the Iron A' Design Award in Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category, represents a harmonious fusion of Japanese Zen philosophy and contemporary design aesthetics. The space is characterized by its thoughtful material selection, primarily utilizing MDF with dark wood finish and white washable wallpaper, divided by a horizontal datum line that creates a distinct visual separation between the upper and lower sections of the interior. A standout feature is the backlit polycarbonate wall, which serves as a modern interpretation of traditional Japanese rice paper facades while incorporating dimensional plants, creating a striking interplay between natural and artificial elements. The design's circulation pattern innovatively combines Western-inspired oriented short walls that generate an almost circular customer flow, departing from typical Japanese linear pathways. The salon's lighting strategy employs dimmable LED systems that interact with natural daylight, promoting energy efficiency while ensuring optimal illumination for beauty services. The project, completed in just seven days of construction, demonstrates exceptional space optimization through its intuitive layout, where the wooden floor texture guides customers naturally from the entrance to the hairdressing stations. The design successfully creates a threshold space between exterior and interior environments, a concept deeply rooted in Japanese architectural tradition, while the rounded mirror shapes and contemporary elements introduce Western design influences, establishing a unique cross-cultural aesthetic dialogue.
