Zen Garden Necklace

Zen Garden Necklace is an innovative piece of wearable art that masterfully combines traditional Japanese craftsmanship with European jewelry-making techniques, created by award-winning jewelry designer Asuka Saito. This sophisticated accessory draws profound inspiration from Japanese garden design, an art form refined over more than a millennium, particularly incorporating elements from Karesansui (dry landscape gardens) and traditional Zen aesthetics. The necklace showcases an intricate fusion of Japanese Tsumami Zaiku, a meticulous craft dating back to the Edo period that involves precisely folding small squares of Chirimen fabric using tweezers, and European Soutache, a sophisticated braiding technique utilizing narrow, flat cords arranged in herringbone patterns. The design's distinctive features include detachable center flowers secured by magnets, allowing for versatile styling options, while its dimensions of 21cm in width, 25cm in height, and 15cm at the top create a balanced and visually striking composition. The piece incorporates natural stones and Swarovski crystals, harmoniously blending with the textile elements to represent the various components of a traditional Japanese garden. The innovative use of Soutache technique to express Karesansui elements demonstrates exceptional technical prowess, as the cords are meticulously curved and stacked in multiple layers to create dynamic patterns that evoke the meditative qualities of Zen rock gardens. This remarkable piece of jewelry design, which was developed between June and September 2018 in San Francisco, earned recognition with an Iron A' Design Award in the Jewelry Design category, acknowledging its outstanding contribution to contemporary jewelry design through its unique combination of cultural elements, technical innovation, and aesthetic excellence.
