Yunhai Shimen Industry Park
Yunhai Shimen Industry Park is a mixed-use architectural development situated in Qujiang District, Quzhou, Zhejiang Province, China, conceived as a catalyst for industrial and economic revitalization through innovative spatial design and urban integration. Designed by architect Minquan Wang in collaboration with Zhejiang University of Technology Engineering Design Group, the project represents a contemporary interpretation of traditional Chinese landscape aesthetics, translating the mountainous topography characteristic of the Qujiang region into a built environment composed of geometric towers and cascading platforms that evoke the imagery of mountains emerging from clouds. The architectural composition spans a site area of 27,457.46 square meters with a building footprint of 9,594.35 square meters, achieving a gross floor area of 132,146.96 square meters across multiple programmatic functions including headquarters spaces, rental offices, residential apartments, and retail facilities, with the primary structures reaching a height of 75 meters. The design strategy deliberately challenges conventional mixed-use development typologies by prioritizing public accessibility and civic engagement through an extensive network of interconnected outdoor platforms that function as extensions of interior programmatic spaces, thereby maximizing the utilization of non-accountable floor area while maintaining compliance with local planning and zoning regulations. The architectural vocabulary employs reinforced concrete for the primary structural system, complemented by a steel moment frame supporting the central Cloud Deck gallery structure, which serves as a focal gathering space for community events and cultural activities at varying scales. The tower facades feature insulated glass units composed of low-emissivity laminated glass with concealed ventilation systems, while exterior cladding materials include anodized aluminum, stainless steel, and granite, selected for their durability and aesthetic coherence with the overall design concept. The spatial organization creates a multi-level public realm that accommodates diverse social interactions, from intimate gatherings on individual platforms to large-scale performances and presentations in the sunken plaza and central gallery spaces, with sky lobbies positioned at the tower crowns to activate these vertical elements with public programming. The project addresses the complex challenge of integrating substantial community functions within a commercially-oriented development by strategically deploying outdoor spaces as programmatic extensions, effectively expanding the reach and capacity for public events without compromising the economic viability of the development. The design methodology involved comprehensive site analysis to determine optimal urban gestures in relation to adjacent park amenities, existing urban programs, and masterplanning frameworks, supplemented by research into Qujiang's cultural and geographical contexts that identified the celebrated natural landscape as a primary source of design inspiration. The cascading platform configuration not only references the region's topographical character but also establishes visual and spatial connections between different functional zones, encouraging spontaneous encounters and planned gatherings across the development's vertical and horizontal dimensions. The architectural massing strategy creates synergistic relationships between the tower volumes, podium structures, the Cloud Deck gallery, and the sunken plaza, collectively forming a focal point for concentrated civic activities while maintaining distinct spatial qualities appropriate to different scales of social interaction. The project accommodates 230 residential units alongside 25,062.50 square meters each of headquarters and rental office space, with 29,800.92 square meters dedicated to retail functions and parking provisions for 895 vehicles, demonstrating the complex programmatic integration required for contemporary mixed-use developments. The design process, initiated in August 2023 and recognized through an open competition in September 2023, exemplifies contemporary approaches to urban development that prioritize public space creation and community engagement within commercially-driven real estate projects. Yunhai Shimen Industry Park received the Golden A' Design Award in the Construction and Real Estate Projects Design category in 2025, one of the world's most prestigious design competitions, which recognizes designs that demonstrate exceptional innovation, visionary approaches, and significant positive impact on their intended audiences through excellence in spatial innovation, sustainable design implementation, architectural quality, environmental integration, functional efficiency, and aesthetic achievement. The award designation acknowledges the project's contribution to advancing architectural discourse regarding the integration of civic functions within mixed-use developments, particularly in rapidly developing urban contexts where economic imperatives must be balanced with community needs and cultural expression. The architectural solution demonstrates how contemporary design can mediate between commercial objectives and public benefit by creating accessible, engaging spaces that serve multiple constituencies while maintaining economic viability and operational efficiency. The project's emphasis on outdoor platform spaces represents a strategic response to spatial constraints and programmatic complexity, transforming potential limitations into opportunities for innovative spatial experiences that enhance both the functional performance and experiential quality of the development. The design's reference to natural landscape elements through abstract geometric forms illustrates contemporary approaches to place-making that honor regional identity and cultural context without resorting to literal historical pastiche, instead establishing meaningful connections between built environment and natural setting through formal analogy and spatial experience.
