You Shape Tools Shape You Exhibition

You Shape Tools Shape You Exhibition is a groundbreaking artistic installation and research project that explores the complex, reciprocal relationship between designers and their computational tools in contemporary design practice. Created by designer Kyuha Shim, this exhibition, which earned a Bronze A' Design Award in the Generative, Algorithmic, Parametric and AI-Assisted Design category, presents a sophisticated examination of McLuhan's concept that we shape tools and thereafter our tools shape us. The exhibition consists of a large-scale installation featuring reflective aluminum tape forming a distinctive 2650mm x 4000mm silver 'S' shape, complemented by a series of digital print posters measuring 700mm x 1000mm each. The installation cleverly employs material reflectivity to symbolize the mirroring nature of the designer-tool relationship, while the accompanying posters showcase typographic forms generated through algorithmic processes, demonstrating the contemporary framework of computational design that encompasses input, algorithm, and output. This innovative exhibition challenges traditional perspectives on design tools as mere instruments, instead presenting them as active participants in a continuous, reciprocal creative process. The work particularly emphasizes how modern computational systems enable designers to generate multiple iterations through parameter-based algorithms, transforming design output from singular results into ranges of variations within defined rule-sets. Through its thoughtful integration of physical installation and generative design principles, the exhibition successfully illustrates the simultaneous and continuously reciprocal nature of contemporary design practices, reflecting the immediate and personal level of tool customization in our current software culture.
