Xinhe Group Headquarters Office
Xinhe Group Headquarters Office is an award-winning architectural complex located in Fuyang City, Zhejiang Province, China, distinguished by its biomimetic design approach that draws inspiration from the dynamic posture of water birds in flight, creating a harmonious integration between built environment and natural landscape. Designed by architect Pengfei He and developed for a client by Simo Architectural Engineering Design Co., Ltd, this office headquarters exemplifies contemporary sustainable architecture through its respectful engagement with the pre-existing ecological context of the site, which historically served as a habitat for water birds. The architectural composition comprises six buildings ranging from three to five stories, strategically arranged along the lakefront in accordance with the natural topography, occupying a site area of 19,000 square meters with a total floor area of 22,800 square meters. The design methodology prioritizes the preservation of the original ecological environment while maximizing the utilization of landscape resources, with the building volumes deliberately fragmented and landscaped to minimize environmental impact and optimize natural light penetration and visual connectivity to the surrounding water bodies and hills. The material palette demonstrates sophisticated integration of stone, wood, glass, carpet, GRG (glass-fiber reinforced gypsum), and metal, each selected and combined according to functional requirements and spatial positioning, creating rich textural contrasts between the solidity of stone and the transparency of glass that generate dynamic interplays of light, shadow, and spatial perception. The architectural parti responds to fundamental design challenges regarding how contemporary office buildings can coexist harmoniously with natural landscapes, how to protect existing ecological systems during development, and how to maximize the experiential benefits of landscape resources for building occupants. The interior spatial organization prioritizes lake views for office areas, promoting a relaxed working environment that maintains visual and psychological connections to the natural surroundings, while the exterior massing strategy employs a dispersed configuration that reduces the perceived scale of the development and enhances its integration with the topographical features. Xinhe Group Headquarters Office received the Golden A' Design Award in the Architecture, Building and Structure Design category in 2025, one of the world's most prestigious design competitions, recognizing the project's exceptional innovation, visionary approach, and significant contribution to advancing sustainable architectural practices. The Golden A' Design Award designation acknowledges designs that demonstrate extraordinary levels of excellence through their innovative use of space, structural integrity, aesthetic appeal, environmental sensitivity, and functional efficiency, characteristics exemplified by this project's biomimetic design concept and ecological integration strategy. The design process, initiated in January 2021, reflects extensive research into the site's ecological history and topographical characteristics, informing an architectural response that positions the building as a mediator between human occupation and natural systems rather than an imposing intervention. The flying bird concept manifests not merely as formal mimicry but as a philosophical approach to architectural design that emphasizes lightness, dynamism, and respectful coexistence with natural habitats, aligning with the client's organizational vision while establishing new paradigms for corporate headquarters design in ecologically sensitive contexts. The project demonstrates how contemporary office architecture can transcend conventional typological constraints to become a carrier for positive environmental interaction, offering a replicable model for future developments that seek to balance programmatic requirements with ecological stewardship. The architectural language employed throughout Xinhe Group Headquarters Office reflects a sophisticated understanding of place-making principles, where the building's identity emerges from its contextual relationships rather than from autonomous formal gestures, creating an architecture that is simultaneously distinctive and deferential to its natural setting. This approach represents a significant contribution to contemporary Chinese architecture, demonstrating how emerging designers like Pengfei He are advancing architectural discourse through projects that prioritize environmental harmony, spatial quality, and user experience while meeting the functional demands of contemporary corporate workplaces.
