Xiangcheng Paradise Walk Shopping Mall
Xiangcheng Paradise Walk Shopping Mall is a large-scale commercial interior space and exhibition design project that represents a sophisticated synthesis of traditional Chinese garden aesthetics with contemporary retail architecture, situated in Suzhou, China, a city historically renowned for its classical gardens and water town heritage. Designed by Junwei Shen and completed in September 2024 after commencing in April 2021, this 145,000-square-meter retail complex encompasses eight floors, including six above ground and two below, organized around the conceptual framework of dancing waters in forested streams, which harmoniously integrates the refined elegance of Suzhou's classical garden waterscapes with the ecological water features characteristic of the Xiangcheng district. The architectural and interior design approach addresses the fundamental challenge of creating a modern, ecologically conscious fashion-oriented shopping destination within a city deeply rooted in classical garden traditions, achieving this through a spatial narrative that transitions from calm to lively to exuberant atmospheres across its seven commercial floors, which are thematically divided into four distinct experiential zones: Water Runway, Moon Island, Water Lane Spaceship, and For Food. The project's most distinctive feature is Moon Island, an innovative cross-level urban natural island spanning 3,000 square meters across the fifth and sixth floors, representing the first such installation in Suzhou and establishing a new paradigm for social and experiential retail formats within the region. Material selection throughout Xiangcheng Paradise Walk Shopping Mall demonstrates careful consideration of both aesthetic quality and regulatory compliance, employing stone flooring, wood grain finishes, and integrated greenery to establish a natural atmosphere, while utilizing wood grain, bronze, and white aluminum plates on walls to meet commercial building fire protection standards without compromising the design's organic character. The incorporation of glass roofing in the atrium spaces facilitates natural light penetration, blurring the boundaries between interior and exterior environments and reinforcing the connection to Suzhou's garden heritage, where the interplay of light, water, and vegetation creates contemplative spatial experiences. This design strategy reflects a broader commitment to elevating urban quality of life through prioritizing sharing, social interaction, and experiential offerings, thereby enhancing consumer engagement and vitality while unlocking spending potential and invigorating market activity in the region. The project's spatial organization and functional programming contribute to creating comfortable, natural social spaces where past, present, and future converge, establishing a dynamic commercial environment that serves both immediate retail functions and longer-term community-building objectives. Xiangcheng Paradise Walk Shopping Mall exemplifies the evolution of retail design beyond transactional spaces toward destinations that foster meaningful human interaction and cultural continuity, demonstrating how contemporary commercial architecture can honor historical context while advancing innovative spatial concepts. The design's recognition with the Golden A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category in 2025 acknowledges its exceptional innovation, visionary approach, and significant impact on retail design practice, with the jury recognizing the project's strong technical attributes, brilliant artistic skill, unique innovations, and creative qualities that advance the boundaries of interior design and commercial architecture. This prestigious accolade, granted to designs that demonstrate excellence and create meaningful value, positions Xiangcheng Paradise Walk Shopping Mall as a benchmark for contemporary retail environments that successfully integrate cultural heritage, environmental consciousness, and commercial viability. The project represents a significant contribution to the discourse on place-making in commercial design, illustrating how retail environments can serve as cultural anchors that celebrate regional identity while accommodating contemporary consumer behaviors and expectations, thereby advancing the practice of interior space design through its thoughtful integration of traditional aesthetic principles with modern retail programming requirements.
