Xerolithi Residence

Xerolithi Residence is an innovative architectural masterpiece located on Serifos Island in the Cyclades, Greece, that exemplifies harmonious integration with its natural surroundings through thoughtful design and sustainable practices. This remarkable residential structure, designed by George Sinas, draws inspiration from traditional local stone retaining walls known as xerolithies, which were historically used for land cultivation on steep slopes. The residence's distinctive design features curved stone walls that appear to float like ribbons across the landscape, creating a fluid progression of living spaces that follow the natural topography. The 180-square-meter ground floor, complemented by a 60-square-meter basement, showcases exceptional architectural ingenuity through its 50-centimeter-thick exterior stone walls and concrete structural system. The design challenges conventional Cycladic architecture, typically characterized by white cubic forms, by introducing an organic, undulating form that emerges naturally from the hillside. A significant feature is the vegetated roof that mimics the surrounding terrain, effectively camouflaging the structure within its environment. The residence incorporates traditional elements such as bamboo pergolas with natural wooden beams that extend throughout the structure, following the curvilinear design like a architectural spine. This Silver A' Design Award-winning project, recognized in the Architecture, Building and Structure Design category, demonstrates excellence in sustainable architecture through its thoughtful integration of local building traditions, innovative spatial organization, and environmental sensitivity. The sequential arrangement of spaces along a linear axis creates a harmonious flow between interior and exterior areas, while the separation of private and communal spaces enables the creation of a central covered veranda that serves as the heart of the home.
