Wunderkammer Residence

Wunderkammer Residence

Wunderkammer Residence is an exemplary interior design project that masterfully integrates art collection display with residential functionality, completed in Taipei City between October 2016 and February 2017. Designed by Han-Chung Liu and Ling-Fong Ko, this sophisticated residential space embodies the concept of a modern cabinet of curiosities, drawing inspiration from the owner's extensive art collection and refined aesthetic sensibilities. The design's primary innovation lies in its strategic reconfiguration of limited space to create an infinite sense of spatial extension through penetrating transparency and carefully curated vistas. The public domain features a grandiose main wall serving as the centerpiece, complemented by multiple sliding doors concealing large-capacity storage and two sets of specialized showcasing cabinets, effectively creating an art gallery atmosphere within a residential setting. The project demonstrates exceptional material selection and execution, particularly evident in the entrance's Oriental Romanticism, the study's glass partitioning, and the integration of high-quality natural materials throughout. The design team achieved a harmonious fusion of Eastern and Western aesthetic elements through strong yet balanced color contrasts and naturalistic material transitions, enhanced by carefully selected furniture pieces. Notable technical achievements include the implementation of a weight-bearing full-height sliding door system and specially treated metal partitioning with powder-spray-painted finishes that highlight material authenticity. The project, which won an Iron A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category in 2019, exemplifies how residential architecture can successfully balance practical living requirements with sophisticated art display, creating a space that serves both as a comfortable home and a personal museum.
