Wulumuqi lu Private Restaurant Private Restaurant is a distinguished architectural renovation project in Shanghai, China, that exemplifies the harmonious fusion of traditional Chinese aesthetics with contemporary design principles. This sophisticated dining establishment, completed in September 2017, encompasses 500 square meters, including a 300-square-meter traditional courtyard, and features four intimate dining rooms and a foyer within a historic two-story brick villa. The design philosophy centers on the seamless integration of interior and exterior spaces, achieved through thoughtful architectural elements such as a specially tilted inner ceiling that creates visual continuity with the outer eave decorations. The restaurant's material palette is deliberately restrained, utilizing only five primary materials: pebble washout, Manchurian ash, marble, iron, and glass, with the innovative application of pebble washout enabling seamless wall treatments both inside and out. A distinctive feature of the design is the incorporation of an engawa-inspired space, drawing from traditional Japanese architecture, which serves multiple functions as a courtyard viewing deck, passageway, and social interaction area. The interior spaces are carefully curated to showcase the owner's collection of Chinese antiques, creating a sophisticated dialogue between historical artifacts and the contemporary architectural intervention. This project, which earned the Silver A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category, demonstrates exceptional achievement in spatial design, successfully creating an atmosphere of tranquility and cultural refinement while maintaining functional efficiency in a limited space.
