WTHN Side Table

WTHN Side Table

WTHN Side Table is an innovative furniture design that exemplifies the transformative potential of material exploration in contemporary furniture design. Created by David Hwang in Los Angeles between February and June 2020, this remarkable side table collection pushes the boundaries of single-material functionality through its sophisticated interaction with environmental lighting conditions. The design features a meticulously crafted faceted structure made from acrylic with dichroic finishes, measuring L430 x W292 x H356 mm and H457 mm, which creates a fascinating visual phenomenon where each faceted side displays distinct colors despite being constructed from the same material. Influenced by the Light & Space movement of California, the design maintains a minimalist form while achieving complex chromatic effects through the interplay of light and surface treatment. The table's innovative use of dichroic finishes, combined with its geometric configuration, enables it to produce varying color displays throughout the day, effectively transforming the surrounding space through its dynamic visual properties. This groundbreaking approach to furniture design earned recognition with a Bronze A' Design Award in the Furniture Design category in 2021, acknowledging its exceptional creative merit and innovative material application. The design allows for modular arrangement, enabling users to create limitless configurations by combining multiple pieces, thus offering both functional versatility and artistic expression. The project represents a significant advancement in furniture design, demonstrating how traditional furniture pieces can be reimagined through innovative material applications and thoughtful design considerations.
