Woven Cultures – G20 Australia 2014 Corporate Identity

Woven cultures – G20 Australia 2014 Corporate Identity is a sophisticated and culturally significant visual communication system that exemplifies the integration of Indigenous Australian heritage with contemporary design principles. Created by designers Riki Salam and Kate Gosnell, this corporate identity project masterfully weaves together traditional storytelling elements with modern graphic design, featuring a distinctive logo that represents the convergence of nations through geometric triangular forms inspired by Indigenous weaving patterns of the Coconut Palm leaf. The design incorporates the Aboriginal Rainbow Serpent spirit motif and the Torres Strait Islander Dhari headdress symbolism, creating a rich visual narrative that reflects Australia's diverse cultural landscape. The color palette draws from the continent's natural environment, spanning from lush rainforest greens to coral reef blues and desert reds, while simultaneously representing various economic sectors central to the summit's agenda. This comprehensive identity system, which earned the Silver A' Design Award in Graphics, Illustration and Visual Communication Design, encompasses a wide range of applications including brand guidelines, publications, business templates, website design, uniforms, environmental graphics, and promotional materials. The project's innovative approach successfully addresses the challenge of creating a distinctly Australian brand identity while facilitating engagement with non-government groups through five brand extensions, ensuring consistent yet flexible implementation across various platforms and contexts. Through its thoughtful integration of Indigenous art forms and contemporary design principles, this corporate identity system effectively communicates Australia's role as host nation while emphasizing themes of collaboration, journey, and cultural diversity.
