Wireframe Affordable Wind Turbine
Wireframe Affordable wind turbine is an innovative social design solution that addresses the critical need for accessible electricity in developing regions through a sustainable and community-driven approach. Developed by Danish designer Ben Koros, this system combines an extremely cost-effective wind turbine design with a comprehensive training program that empowers local communities to build, maintain, and propagate renewable energy solutions. The turbine itself, known as the WF II, is engineered with remarkable cost efficiency, utilizing recycled components and biodegradable materials such as PLA for 3D-printed parts and styrene sheets for the cover and blades. With a blade diameter of 1200mm and a frame length of 400mm, the turbine is positioned at an optimal height of 2000mm, though this can be adjusted based on local conditions. The design's significance lies not only in its affordability, with production costs under 15 Euros, but also in its simplified construction process that enables assembly in approximately 15 minutes. This accessibility is crucial for its implementation in areas lacking traditional infrastructure. The system's holistic approach includes training local residents in turbine construction, maintenance, and grid infrastructure development, creating a sustainable model for community-driven energy solutions. The project, which earned the prestigious Golden A' Design Award in the Social Design category in 2017, demonstrates exceptional innovation in addressing energy poverty while promoting environmental sustainability and community empowerment. The design's emphasis on using locally available materials and accessible technologies ensures long-term viability and independence for village households, enabling essential activities such as LED lighting, radio communication, and the operation of basic electrical tools.
