Where The Root Is Office
Where The Root Is Office is an award-winning interior design project that masterfully integrates traditional Chinese cultural elements with contemporary office functionality, located in Shanghai's historic HsingKuo Building. The design concept draws profound inspiration from the ancient Chinese philosophy of Greeting Guests with Tea and the traditional spatial concept of Circular Sky and Square Earth. The interior space features sophisticated walnut timber elements and grey wool carpeting, creating a serene and meditative atmosphere that harmoniously blends Eastern and Western design sensibilities. The project's innovative approach to space utilization addresses the challenges of limited ceiling height and column intervals through lightweight ceiling work and darkened walnut flooring, while incorporating timber grille screens that provide both transparency and spatial division. The design employs a sophisticated material palette dominated by dark walnut textures, symbolizing stability and rootedness, complemented by high-tech woven fabrics and grey tiles that reference traditional Chinese aesthetics. The open-plan layout facilitates both professional operations and cultural interactions through a dedicated tea-tasting area, furnished with Ming Dynasty-inspired wooden tables and chairs. Natural light plays a crucial role in the design, entering through large windows and creating dynamic interplays of light and shadow through the wooden grille screens, which are styled after classic Chinese window lattices. This exceptional interior design project, completed in 2019, was honored with the Silver A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category in 2020, recognizing its outstanding achievement in creating a space that successfully merges cultural heritage with contemporary office requirements.
