Weihai Hospital Medical Building

Weihai Hospital Medical Building

Weihai Hospital Medical Building is a distinguished medical facility situated in a coastal pinus thunbergii forest in the East New Town of Weihai, China, exemplifying a harmonious blend of traditional Chinese architectural principles with contemporary design elements. Completed in 2018, this comprehensive healthcare facility encompasses approximately 8,000 square meters and comprises three main components: a programme exhibition center, a sanatorium, and medical care houses. The architectural design presents an innovative interpretation of traditional northern Chinese courtyard architecture, featuring an inverted Y shape configuration that incorporates flush gable roofs, double slope tops, and selective gable and hip roof elements. The building's exterior demonstrates sophisticated material selection, utilizing Portuguese white sandstone walls, aluminum-magnesium-manganese roofing, and European gray glass, creating a refined aesthetic that respects traditional forms while embracing modern construction techniques. The facade design emphasizes vertical elements through the thoughtful integration of divide lines, white walls, landing windows, and wooden-colored metal grilles, achieving a contemporary expression that maintains cultural sensitivity. This Gold A' Design Award-winning project in the Architecture, Building and Structure Design category stands as a testament to successful architectural adaptation, where the preservation of the surrounding forest was prioritized, and the challenge of balancing traditional Chinese architectural elements with modern functionality was masterfully addressed. The design philosophy centered on imitating but not copying traditional style, resulting in a structure that serves both as a functional medical facility and an architectural statement about the evolution of Chinese design principles in contemporary healthcare environments.
