Waterway School Library is an innovative educational space design that reimagines the traditional school library concept through a maritime-inspired architectural approach. Located on Lantau Island, Hong Kong, this 3,900-square-foot interior space harmoniously integrates the surrounding natural seascape with contemporary educational needs. The design employs a sophisticated color palette of sea blue, cement gray, and wood tones to create a metaphorical connection between knowledge acquisition and maritime navigation. The library's distinctive diagonal linear design serves as its primary axis, transforming conventional spatial arrangements into a dynamic learning environment. Notable features include a strategically positioned borrowing desk, an innovative book display system, and a multifunctional staircase that doubles as a teaching area with a 30-person capacity. The design incorporates sustainable materials including plastic laminate, vinyl sheet, paint, and glass, while the ceiling design features an artistic interpretation of a knowledge breeze flowing through white surfaces. This Silver A' Design Award-winning project, recognized in the Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category, successfully addresses the challenges of traditional library layouts by creating an open, sharing concept that encourages student engagement. The design philosophy emphasizes the library as a vessel of knowledge, where learning becomes a journey guided by architectural elements. The space optimization includes self-study areas with bar seating offering natural views, creating a harmonious balance between functionality and aesthetic appeal. The project, completed in April 2022, represents a significant advancement in educational space design, demonstrating how thoughtful interior architecture can enhance learning experiences and increase library utilization.
