Water Prism Water Glass

Water Prism Water Glass is an innovative drinkware design that exemplifies the intersection of functional utility and artistic expression through its unique architectural structure and scientific principles. Created by designers Yinshuai Zhang, Hansi Zhao, and Shuai Chang, this remarkable glass vessel features a distinctive 45-degree sloping bottom that divides the container into two triangular sections, ingeniously transforming it into an optical instrument when filled with water. The design's primary innovation lies in its ability to create a natural prism effect, whereby sunlight passing through the water-filled glass projects a spectrum of colors, commonly known as a rainbow, onto the surrounding surface. Manufactured through a sophisticated process involving heating glass to 1500°C and precision modeling, the vessel measures 68mm x 68mm x 76mm, making it both practical for everyday use and optimal for its light-refracting properties. The design philosophy behind this piece emphasizes the importance of discovering and appreciating natural phenomena in everyday life, particularly relevant in fast-paced urban environments. The creation process involved extensive prototyping and testing to determine the optimal angle for rainbow projection, ultimately resulting in a simple yet effective two-piece construction method where two sloping-bottomed glass components are fused together. This innovative tableware design, which earned the Silver A' Design Award in the Bakeware, Tableware, Drinkware and Cookware Design category, represents a thoughtful approach to emotional design, encouraging users to pause and appreciate the beauty of natural optical phenomena in their daily routines. The project, which originated at Tsinghua University's Academy of Arts and Design, demonstrates how functional objects can be elevated to create meaningful interactions between users and their environment, while maintaining simplicity in form to allow the natural phenomenon to take center stage.
